hand/foot brake light

85 F-150

The hand brake light on my dash starting sticking in the on position. It used to go off after resetting the handbrake and pulling it back off a couple of times. Now that is not turning it off. The hand brake light on my dash stays lit all the time. Is it a simple fix?

I had some new tires put on last week and the mechanic mentioned it to me. The brake , over time , has got some wear on it and the spring that pushes it back up is worn out. It, loosing some spring, has a hard time coming back up. I can pull up on the brake and the light on my dash will go out. If I don't fix it the light will eventually go out permanently I guess. He said it was not real easy to replace the spring and I would probably not want to do it myself. HE said on an 85 I can't get the spring anymore and I would have to find a compatible one from some other year.

It's possible that one of the return springs is worn out, but it's more likely that one of the cables is starting to seize and thats why the spring can't pull it back. Either way you should be able to find parts. I bought an entire parking brake setup the other day, shoes, hardware, cables, springs, etc and that was for a '73. Napa had all the parts in stock.

I’m not totally out of it..I know how to change a tire and the oil….but I don’t know about troubleshooting stuff like that.. Does Napa do that kind of work?

What do you think it would cost?
