Post High speed vibration solved!

For anyone out there with an extended cab who is experiencing a high speed vibration Ford has a TSB on it under vibration/extension housing wear. The drive shafts on the extended cabs are too small in diameter by 1/2 inch for their length which causess a vibration. The fix is to replace the drive shaft, the extension housing and the ujoint assembly. Ford did mine out of warenty for a $100 deductible. Hope this saves someone the three months agrevation I had.

Question

I've got a vibration/shake/shudder at 45mph to 50 mph. I feel it real bad through the steering wheel as it move back and forth. Is this what you are reffering to?
I've had the tires balanced and the front end aligned and the shudder is still there but only around 45 to 50MPH.

69mach1,

No, my vibration could be felt through the seats and floor. Could not feel it at all through the steering wheel. Sorry. Good Luck! Try and look up the Ford TSBs on this site for your problem.

Hey War Eagle,

I have a 2K f150 extended cab, and it has the "vibration". It is between 40-50 real bad, the Ford Dealer here looked at it, and found that it is normal for a truck to do this. I am on the phone with Michigan, and they were wondering if there is a TSB # I can get from you. Because they are unaware of it. But they were also unaware of the TSB on my friends car, and his fuse box and computer fried because of it! So help me out if you can!
Thanx!!!!

eixster,

Just click on the recalls/TSBs on the left side of this site. Go to TSBs and look for vibration/tail extension wear. That is where I found it to begin with. Good luck it took me a while to get them to take care of it.

Unhappy

I still could not find it, but they are going to ccontact the service manager here to get me in and see what is wrong. I threatened to take the truck in and leave it, stopping the auto pay I have set up. The ccustomer rep freaked out and said not to do that, that she would with out a doubt get it fixed immediately!

If you could email me the actual link to the webste, I would appreciate it!

I just fell into a deal last night too...A friend of mine is selling me a set of 16.5 X 10 rims, for 300. He paid almost 900 for them 2 months ago, but he is going wwith a custom lift and 44 X 16 tires, and needs bigger rims.

Thanx for the help...

Hey Wareagle
I have a 97 F150 4x4ORP with a vibration at highway speed but you dont feel it till you get to like 55 or so. the deal is that it did not start until i had my gears changed to 4.56 then pow it vibrated from then on. Could this be one and the same cause i can feel it through the floor of my truck and the mechanics that did my gears arent sure either and told me i need to leave the truck with them for a couple of days to figure it out. Sorry to run on and on, But what do you think?

Your 4.56 gears sounds like the problem to me. Maybe the shop didn't set the gears right (backlash, pinion depth, etc). Diff settings are crucial to a good axle. I am not an axle expert in anyway but , I do know that much.

Hey WarEagle,

I saw your upgrades and was wondering where you saw your greasest improvement..with the chip or the gears?
If i get the chip I wont install it without the JBA and Exhaust.

Any info would be appreciated!

eixter,

The service bulletin # is 9913125,Sequence # 902 dated 9908. Hope this helps. The chip gave me the biggest improvement. I did the cat back first then added the FPIK and noticed a huge improvement with the FPIK. Then came the chip and I saw an even bigger perfromance gain. The headers gave me a nice mid range power increase but noticed a slight decrease in low end power. The 4.10's gave a real nice improvement in low end performance, highway driving and towing. Gas mileage is 16 in town, on the road 70 mph 18.5, 80 mph 16.5.

bigrn6697,

I noticed my vibration right after the gear change. I'll bet it is your problem as well. Once they changed out the drive shaft, extension housing and u joint assembly no more vibration at any speed up to 90 mph.

I question this fix. My brand new SC has less than 500 miles on it and has a bad torque induced driveline vibration. The TSB mentioned was released in 1999. Supposedly, all vehicles built since should be correct. Mine isn't.

WarEagle,

I appreciate your input, and I am again on hold with the folks at MI. They are trying to find all the info so I can go to my local ford dealer here and just get it fixed.

Thanx,
Nate

Thumbs up

THANKS!!!! War Eagle....THANKS! You have solved the great mystery! I have been trying for two years or better to find out the solution to my high speed vibration problem. After having the transmission replaced once and the rearend (pinion bearing) repaired twice, I was at a dead end. My local Ford dealership was repairing the damage, but not fixing the defect.

Thanks again!
Scott Jones
