manual 4x4 shift won't engage

done alittle searching on here but still not sure. my truck is a 98 with the manual shift on the floor 4x4, it has been working for me just fine. but the wife has been complaning about it not working for her. and today i could not get it to shift into 4H. no light and no clicking from under the dash. this is the first it has happened to me. not sure where to start on this one..is it a relay, or the shift motor, the plastic fork thing that i keep reading about..not sure..what do you guys thing
thanks

Aren't the solenoids in the engine compartment on the firewall?

I think they're these two guys on the firewall behind the battery (center top in the pic below). Maybe someone w/ more knowledge than myself could confirm this ...

If the position switch on the t-case is defective the GEM will not turn on the 4x4 lights nor engage the front axle.

The switch is located next to the breather hose on the front of the transfer case. There are two wires going into it. Both these wires get grounded when you shift into 4x4. One is Gray. It gets grounded when you shift into 4Hi and stays grounded in 4Lo. The other is Light Blue with a Black stripe and gets grounded when in 4Lo. In 2 wheel drive they are not grounded. To test the switch you need a multi meter that can test for continuity. Remove the connector and test the the prongs for continuity to ground. Shift into 4Hi test and then into 4Lo and test again. The only concern is that if the fault is intermittent you may get a false positive.

now thats its finally warm enough to start working on the truck again, i am going to check these out, but i have one question that just boggles my mind, when i 4wd is working, my wipers work just fine, when the 4wd is not working then my wipers dont work, is there a plug that both of these use, this all kind of started after i pulled the dash to do my heater core.

also the light on the dash doesn't come on when i pull the lever..but it does light up when you first start the truck, so i know its not burnt out

I am having the exact same problem with my 06. I am planning on working on mine this week. But I can get it to shift I to 4low. Any thoughts? It feels like it is engaged just no light in 4high. Are there expensive to repair or replace?

I have looked at my transfer case, there is only a two wire harness next to the breather line not a three wire. When I pull the shifter I get a small clicking noise but when I push it back to 2wd I get the louder clicking and can feel it a little on the floor.

I still have no light in 4hi, it flickers on for a split second when pulling it back but is not on when the 4hi is supposed to be engaged. The light does come on when the truck is in 4Lo...

I think that it is engaging the front axle just not the light....what switch are you talking about, you mean the connector on the front of the transfer case, how do you change that, I am assuming that it just unscrews out or something????
