Hey guys Im about to dump my Jeep GC trail rig to get an early 90's 2wd 5.0 F150. I want to go prerunner with it. Start out with a small 2-3 inch lift glass fenders, and say some 33's. Then beat on it for a while til I need more and have the money for a big $$$ long travel suspension and 35's. Has anyone run 4.88 gears with 33" tires? Using the RPM calculator I should be around 2165 RPM at 65 MPH with a AODE. Dont plan on driving it much faster. Also it wont be a DD, just used for play, camping, the occasional light hauling or towing. I dont want to run around with 33s and stock gears, but I want to regear knowing Im probably gonna go with bigger tires down the road.

 

IMHO id say that 4.88's would be way to much for 33's

 

you would roast 33's with 4.88's. id say do it

 

You are going to want 37's before you know it so than you need 5.13 gearing for it. As 0-70-80ish is the most important. I say save up the cash and do it all at once.

4.88s and 33's will be very deep gears. I ran 4.88's and 35's which worked great as long as I kept my foot out of it, the 8.8 exploded every few months. I thought 4.88s were plenty deep for 35's

 

My bro has a full size Blazer with 33's and 4.56's. Thats with a 700R4 tranny with a 3.06:1 first. Does fine on the highway and really helps that old 80's 160-170 horse motor on the trail. I DD a 2000 Mustang GT with 25.7 inch tires and 4.10 gears. I dont think I'll go bigger than 35's because of cost, weight, and can cause drivetrain parts to brake with taller tires. Unless Im somewhere that I need the extra 1" of ground clearance. Or of course I can get a good deal on 37's. Wonder how long 4.88's a locker and 33s will last. Probly end up with a 302 then build a punched out to 347.
