Help Please - I've been told that the "pin" in my 99 F150 Rear End is worn (220K Miles) and I need to replace the rear end. One place said that I should replace the entire axle while another said just the 'spider gear kit'. I've never replaced a rear end or axle. Can anyone offer advice/picture/instruction. tks/Vic S.

It may be a little late.... but you can replace the "pin" pretty easily. If you're not hearing growling noises from your rear end, then the ring gear and pinion are probably fine. Just pull the pin, pull the spider gears and then replace them with new. It is very simple and doesn't require any fancy measuring or shimming.

Spider Gears
Hi - I'd suggest double checking to make sure there was plenty of grease in the rear end and also make sure the noise isn't coming from the axle(s). If you do get new gears, I'd suggest finding the ones you want on the internet and calling Advance Auto or O'Riley as they will likely match the price (you save tax which will ususally equal the shipping). Good luck/Regards/Vic S.

bigun72,
If your spider gears chipped then they were subjected to higher levels of stress than they were designed for. Make sure the differential case is not cracked. This will allow the 2 pinions to spread apart from the side gears and they chip. The clutch packs wear out and the resulting flakes can get in between the gear teeth and also cause cracking of the gears or the carrier. Take a close look at the ring and pinion too.
