SO.... if they had to make em bigger to be as strong and they weight the same then they have cancelled out any advantage or, for that matter, disadvantage it would seem.

That's what I'm thinking cphilip.

I also think that with the weights being equal, steel is more expensive than crushed beer cans, thus the change.

I have it on good authority that they use cheap store brand soda cans, like Check etc., not name brand ones. Also, I have it on good authority that the steel ones are forged from retired US Navy battle ships of distinction. Ones that have distinguished themselves in a historic conflict. I am so proud.

I`m real sure that my shaft is steel, because there was rust scale on it before I painted it. But I will check to see for sure later tonite. I have to make a change in my fog light wiring so I`ll check then. So I will re-post on this later!!.Lariat#1

Cool

My 99 SuperDuty with Tow Package, V-10 & 4R100 Auto-tranny has a pretty, large diameter ORANGE driveshaft.
I'm guessing "Steel" and about 5-6" diameter.
I didn't measure it, not did I stick a magnet on it.
I'm glad it's STEEL. Someone mentioned earlier that "pound for pound, aluminum is stronger". That may very well be true, but when you stop to consider that a 6" diameter aluminum driveshaft will be MUCH LIGHTER than the same size steel tube, the Steel tube will be STRONGER.

Just a couple of observations at this point. I've looked at the steel and aluminum driveshaft parked side by side and the aluminum has much more girth. I would think the weight is the same because Ford makes no allowance for which driveshaft when stating the curb weight of the vehicle. All the Lightnings, 54regcab, Neal and myself have the 120" wheelbase with a steel one, so I don't think we'll come across a 120" with aluminum. On the longer wheelbase(s) the count is (7)Steel (18)Aluminum.

My dad's 99f150 regcab longbed is Aluminum, (my brother's 2000 Silverado Extracab, shortbed is steel).

The '93 F150 LWB that I just sold had an aluminum shaft. The 2000 F150 LWB I just bought has an aluminum shaft. Our '97 Expedition, however, has steel shafts. So, vehicle length may have something to do with the metal used???

Steel shaft, rusty. Surprisingly rusty. Can't quite recall ever seeing a drive shaft this rusty. Could this be a problem in the future? '99 4x4 SC SB.

The old '97 must have had an aluminum shaft since I recall it being rust free and massive.
