subtle noise coming from 4x4 floor shifter 97

There is a very subtle grinding noise coming from the 4x4 floor shifter in my 1997 f150. I can hear it when i get up to about 25mph and it stays the same no matter how fast I go. Its definitely the shifter because if i tap it or move it slightly the noise slightly changes. I took it to a mechanic today and he told he me he didnt hear a thing. However, my gf can hear it and she usually doesnt notice anything like that. I dont know how long its been like this as I just bought the truck
Any ideas?
The truck goes in to 4hi and 4lo fine. I have not been able to drive the truck above 25mph in 4hi to see if the noise is still there
Thanks.

I have the exact same problem with my 99 and yesterday I crawled underneath and looked at the linkage. Upon closer inspection it appears that there is some kind of bumper that goes between the linkage that has fallen out and lets 2 metal components of the shifter touch metal to metal causing the noise you mentioned. If you move the lever slightly to the left the noise goes away. I went to the dealer yesterday to try and find a park but no luck. HELP!
