I want a new axle but...

what axles will have the same bolt pattern as my 8.8? i want to get a bigger axle but i dont want to have to buy new rims right now...if i am correct, the 10.25 is 8 lug right? and is the 9.75 a 5 lug with the same pattern as the 8.8? I am in need of regearing my axle for my bigger tires but i dont like how small the axle is and i dont want to end up breaking it and having to buy one anyways. so i figured i would go ahead and upgrade my axle while im doing gears...seems to make sense to me. also, how easy is it to swap the axle in? driveway job or take it to a shop job? i know mine has drum brakes right now...do i have to get an axle with drum brakes or can i get disk breaks? if i do get disk brakes, what do i need to do to get them to work...or is it the same?

I know thats a lot of questions but axles are one thing that i am completely oblivious to. so any help, suggestions or comments on what i am doing is greatly appreciated. Thanks for yalls help.

I just got done doing an axle swap on a lowered Ram 1500, swaping from stock to SRT10 axle. We did it in a one car garage. Its possible to do in driveway or garage

8.8 and 9.75 will have same bolt pattern if it is from same year model.

97-2003 have 5 lug (on ***** 8.8 and 9.75)
04-2009 have 6 lug (on ***** 8.8 and 9.75)

You can upgrade to discs while you have it torn apart, but i cant think of what all you will need off of the top of my head.

I believe driveshaft will bolt right up too. (thats the main issue we are having on the dodge right now)

Good luck

Something else to remember, the 97-99 have 12mm lugs and the 00-03 are 14mm lugs.

either bring a spare wheel with you and test fit it, or measure the distance between the studs in milimeters

How hard is it to change the brakes from drum to disk? I would like to get an axle that has disk brakes but would that work or is there a conversion kit that i need to get? Has anyone done this and did a write up on it on here? with pictures maybe?

and is there one for swaping the axle? or somewhere where i can find instructions on how to do it so i can decide whether it is something i can do or not? Thanks

I saw some new take offs on ebay, 9.75 for the '97-03 models,,,he had 2 kinds, one was 355 i think and one was 373 LS , if i remember. Cost was around $600 plus truck freight cause they are very heavy. Also they had drum brakes. I have found out many many yrs ago that when a late model car or truck comes in a junkyard, it will be picked apart very fast like buzzards on a dead animal. Esp. those u pull it. I'll find that link on ebay. rossford
