Noisy rear-end

Noisy rear-end
Good afternoon, folks.
After WFO acceleration from 0-70 getting back on I-95 towing a 2000# pop-up, I am getting a whine from the rear-end. Thought it was from the tranny, but I hear it in top 3 gears. (Yes I have the infamous Mazda 5 speed)
166K on the truck, which has been overloaded a few times in it's past, but not speed-shifted or jerked around. Rear oil only 20K old. Heard no "pops" or "snaps" when this happened.
I'm planning on pulling the cover this weekend.
Should I look at the gears, or consider wheel bearings? It still pulls smoothly other than the noise.
With a noisy rear-end, who's going to be the first to make a crack about my diet?
