Synthetic Transfer Case Oil

Synthetic Transfer Case Oil
I think I have seen the answer to this question before but can't seem to locate it so... I have a '97 4x4 and am getting ready to change the transfer case oil. I would like to put the best in it so what do I use. Synthetic? The manual calls for Mercron. What is the comparable synthetic?
Thanks!

Thanks!

Ford stopped making Mercon in late 2007. Mercon V replaces it. Any synthetic ATF that is Mercon or Mercon V rated will work. I have run Royal Purple, Redline, Amsoil, Mobil 1 and any other brand that was on sale. They were synthetic and met the Ford spec. I cannot remember, nor do I care, what is in it now but it is synthetic.

Royal Purple recommends it's Synchromax Manual Transmission Fluid for 4X4 transfer cases.
Synchromax is a manual transmission fluid that increases performance and the life of your equipment. It improves shifting, reduces gear noise and increases power transfer to the wheels. It also lowers operating temperatures and provides outstanding wear protection for longer transmission life.
Synchromax is recommended for manual transmissions that specify an automotive transmission fluid. It’s also ideal for 4×4 transfer cases and motorcycle gear boxes. Synchromax is fully compatible with all types of friction materials. It provides excellent corrosion and oxidation protection without affecting the soft metals commonly found in manual transmission synchronizers.
Synchromax is formulated with Royal Purple’s proprietary Synerlec technology for unsurpassed performance and protection.
See our transmission lubricant cross reference chart for specific applications.
Synerlec, Royal Purple’s proprietary, additive lubricant technology, is the cornerstone of RP's entire product line. It creates an ionic bond that adheres to metal parts to provide continuous protection even at start-up and strengthens the oil to provide unparalleled performance and protection.
Royal Purple’s film strength is up to 400% stronger than other oils. High film strength prevents contact between metal parts and improves sealing inside the engine for more complete combustion and dramatically reduced wear. Improved combustion creates more power, better fuel economy and reduced emissions.
Royal Purple remains on the metal surface long after ordinary lubricants would have been squeezed out by pressure and heat. It actually improves engine surfaces by responding to increased pressure with increased viscosity until the metal peaks (asperities) undergo deformation and flow into the low spots. Over time, the metal surface becomes extremely smooth and can even develop a mirror-like surface.

Royal Purple or any of the brands mentioned in this thread already get the job done.
