Question Windshield Wiper Troubles

Sometimes my windshield wipers come on and then go off. Also, when I try to spray water, I have to hold down on the control for a long time. Anybody else have this problem? I have a 97.

I don't have that problem but I do have the phantom wiper - they wipe the windshield once when ever they want to. My dealer called me last week to let me know they now have the parts to fix it. I brought it in about 1 month ago for it and they said Ford didn't have a fix yet. My wife is dissapointed that it will be fixed, she thinks it's funny when my wipers turn on when ever they want to.

I have trouble with the washer fluid sometimes but I haven't really investigated it yet. I want to check to see if the pump is running when I press the button. The problem is I only think about it when I'm going down the road and not when the truck is parked.

This is a known problem and there are TSB's on this. It is called a Phantom wiper sweep. The fix is a new GEM module and multifunction switch. Even if you don't have the sweep problem, the new multifunction switch will fix your washer button problem.

Kirby,

I had the same problem on my 97 f150. no phantom sweep, but I almost had to twist the whole mecanism off to get the sprayer to work..I guess it was a bad contact. Ford replaced the switch..no more problems with it.

Glad to have my new GEM module. It was getting worse. Back when I told them about the problem (about a month ago), my dealer said he had a bunch of new Expeditions on the lot that they couldn't sell yet- they had "stolen" the new module of of them. Apparently some people's wipers wouldn't turn off at all.

back when I had my 98, I had the windsheild washer problem. I took it to my dealer and the dumbass tech. that worked on it installed an Expedition multi-function switch (which includes the controls for a rear windsheild wiper/washer, the only problem is that F-150s don't have a rear wiper/washer).

I was laughing and pissed off at the same time. I traded it in that way on my 99. The dealer has since been bought out and is much better after firing almost all of the old guys.

Question

I also have a wiper related problem, but it isn't quite the same! At times when using the turn signal, my washer activates, drenching the windshield and subsequently activating the wipers! It keep the windshield clean, but can be pretty nerve racking temporarily loosing visibility in mid-turn! Any one else experiencing this problem?

I have a 98 with the same problem when pushing the lever for the spray, no spray from time to time. Still have to go to the dealer. I am just including it in my warranty list for the next stop. Hate to go there. Everything takes forever. Try another dealer???? They are all the same.

Where can I get a TSB number for this problem? My 97 F-150 had this problem fixed (switch replaced) under warranty at 30,000 miles and will probably need it again pretty soon since I have about 55,000 now. My father is having the same problem at 65,000 miles on his, and Ford wants $260 to fix it. His problem is more severe since it also randomly sprays washer fluid.

Cool

If ya got a phillips head screwdriver and a Torx driver, I think t-25, you can do it yourself, and this way you only have to pay for parts. Ya gotta remove the lover shroud, 3 screws, then remove the switch, 2 screws.
