How can I find out my rear end gear ratio?

Hi Guys, new user.

Can I find out my gear ratio from my vin number? Bought my truck used and I'm not sure what ratio I have.

Also, my truck came with all the equipment that comes with the Off Road package (skid plates, tow hooks, 17" rims, etc) but it doesn't have the "4x4" decals on the side. Is it possible to have the Off Road Package without the decals? Does the package include special shocks?

Thanks for any help!

2001 F150 Supercab 4x4 w/4.6 V8 & 5-speed

Hello scgirl,

Look on your door sticker under Axle code and match it up below. The decals can be taken off, I purchased a used 2000 4x4 and mine where removed, I purchased new ones from Ford and put them back on. The Off-Road Package comes with Heavy Duty shocks.

(Axle codes)
17 = 3.31 Open Differential <i>(Non-Limited Slip)</i>
19 = 3.55 Open Differential <i>(Non-Limited Slip)</i>
H6 = 3.73 Limited Slip
H7 = 3.31 Limited Slip
H9 = 3.55 Limited Slip

How to find rear end gear ratio

Hi rkjerue,

Thanks for your reply, but that's what's been throwing me. I've looked on the door sticker, and there's nothing under "axle".

It looks like this:

EXT PNT: UA RC-21 DSO:
WB BRK INT TR TP/TS R AXLE TR SPR 1F526
139 C M2 5 M 6N QOA
UTC

That's why I thought maybe somebody could tell me if it's located somewhere in the VIN.

Can you make out anything from this door sticker?

Thanks!

Yours may have had the stickers removed. They can be taken off very easily. Mine came from the factory with the 4X4 sitckers but was actually equipped with the off road package. It was misbadged.

You could also check on the pumkin itself.

There's a tag on the rear-end.

Unhappy Rear end ratio

mf150,

Well, I've just crawled out from under the truck, and the tag states the following:

S 829 D
3L 55 88
OHO4

None of this looks like the codes previously posted.

Any ideas?

U have 3:55 gears with limited slip and 8.8 diameter rear-end.

3L 55 = 3:55 gear ratio, Limited Slip

88 = 8.8 Diameter rear-end

S = place of manufacture (Sterling plant)

i looked in my drivers side door jam and under axle i had 29? What's this mean?

I turn 2000rpm@78 on the biggest tire you can put under non-lifted frame.

What year/model is your truck? I don't see a 29 in the list we usually post for this question.
The following lists the gear ratios on rear axles.
19 - 3.55 non-limited slip (Econoline, F-150)
18 - 3.08 non-limited slip (F-150)
17 - 3.31 non-limited slip (Econoline)
H9 - 3.55 limited slip (F-150, F-250)
B6 - 3.73 limited slip (F-150, F-250)
24 - 3.73 (Econoline)
32 - 4.10 (Econoline)
35 - 4.09 (Econoline)

D1 - 3.27 limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)
D4 - 3.73 limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)
D2 - 4.10 limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)
84 - 3.45 non-limited slip (Ranger)
86 - 3.73 non-limited slip (Ranger)

96 - 3.73 non-limited slip (Ranger)
R6 - 3.73 limited slip (Ranger)

Sorry about that typo, the correct number is 27, so that means i have 3.31 non-limited.
With my 33" tires that explains why i am so slow off the start.
Now i need to figure out which rear end i have. Next to the axle number on the sticker there was a R that said 9. Does this mean 9" rear end? However, i counted 12 bolts on the differential cover and randy's ring and pinion told me that it was 10.25".

By the way i have a '97 f250 light duty with the 4.6. I know, sucks for me but when i regear its gonna be an animal.

Right now i can be going 100mph at about 2500 rpm..LOL!!!

Bellicose, my truck lists it's axle as being a 27 code as well, but it's an F-150, not an F-250...and my cover has 10 bolts instead of your 12. Very strange. I read that 10 bolts makes it an 8.8, and 12 makes it a 9.75...so now I am lost because of what you heard from Randy's.

Check the tag in the door jam or look for it on the diff.
