has anyone opened up tail lights to paint?

i have an idea and want to see if anyone has done this yet.. i tinted my tails with Niteshades about a year ago and they look somewhat dark and still show plenty of light through them, but i want them darker without messing with the light output anymore.
so i am thinking if i bake them in the over to open them up and paint all of the chrome inside ** except where the tail lights project the light** and seal them back up i will get the result of them appearing darker but still having the red lens and a decent amount of light output ... i also want to paint the inside of the reverse lights so the lens will still be clear but the chrome inside will be black, i dont care about the reverse light output..

has anyone attempted this yet? or am i the Guinea pig??? i thiink it will look alot better but at the same time keep the Cops from pulling me over for them not being bright enough...

i guess im getting bored and looking to invent some new DIY mods..

this is what they look like now

oh yeah, i finally painted my Roush exhaust tips!! 4.2Trimble was going to powder coat them for me but i decided to buy a $5 can of paint and give it a shot.. they came out real good!

Tips look great but should have continued on with the pipe leading up to the tips?

I seen someone take apart the taillights for 06+ rangers and paint the inside, looked like a ranger version of a harley F150 taillight in my opinion

I do recall hearing that the tails did not come apart well at all with the baking method, I think a dremel ended up being the solution and just cutting the tails into 2 halves

But I feel like it would only make the reverse light look sweet, doesn't seem like you'd notice much difference behind the red lens that's already nightshaded.

Try it anyway that's my vote!

its going to look like you tinted a set of harley tails... I will be watching this if you end up doing it. I have a spare set of tails for my truck (flareside) that I am planning on making into LED tails and tinting. I might be interested in doing this as well.

Harley tails are darken with this method I do believe. The large chrome piece in the back-up light is darker, so the plastic is painted. Very similar to what FX2.3 or whatever his name is over on RF. I say we order up a set of OEM tails and do it up.

i tried to do it this past weekend and i kept them in the over for 10+ minutes and they still wouldn't come apart.. it sucks because the red plastic lens is so thin were the adhesive is, i felt like i was going to break them..

i will probably buy someones OEM tails off them and try it so if they break i will have a back up pair. but stay tuned i'm going to do it..... eventually!

Let me know if you need a hand, I can meet you and maybe 2 heads is better than one. I have a large toaster oven I can bring too.

Look on ebay for some tail lights that are black on the inside you can usually find some for cheap but if there not top quality I would take them apart and make sure you got a real good seal. Like these..
