Premium sound amp specs?

I have the "premium sound" (yeah, right!) package and am wondering what the output watts of the amp in the original head unit are. Anybody know? If I have those numbers I can make a reasonable estimate of how much more power I want (about twice as much!)
I'll probably keep the head, add an amp, and replace the four speakers. Nothing fancy, just more than what's there now. Suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,

Neil

Neil;
This question pops up every couple of months. We have a member who is Visteon (Ford) audio engineer - - "Tim A". Here is an excerpt from one of his posts last year re. the premium system specs. Hope this helps. Do a search on Tim A's postings for more info. Haven't seen him for a while - - hope he stops by the forums every once in a while.

The standard systems have a 4x6 watt amp (in the head) driving regular speakers.

The premium systems have a 4x20 watt amp (in the head) driving regular speakers in the back and premium (2 way) speakers in the front.

An Audiophile system has a 4x20 watt amp (in the head) driving the same speaker config as premium, with a powered subwoofer (has its own amp) and the system is Equalized to tune the sound to the interior of the vehicle space. This system is not offered on the F series, but it is on the SUVs and Lincolns."

The "Premium Stereo System in the 2001 and 2002 Screw is 40 Watts total (or 4 x 10 watts). The 4 speakers are all the same, 25 watt max paper cones made by Ford in Mexico as stated on their sticker. This would be the Stereo head made by Visteon (either single CD player or Tape player with 6 CD changer in console).

What vehicle do you have?

I bought the Visteon Mach MP3 player from them and installed. It sounds a little better with stock speakers as it is 60 total watts (or 4 x 15 watts). It sounds much better with aftermarket 6x9's, and after tomorrow, will sound REALLY good with a Clarion 100 watt SUB and a Kenwood 500.4 amp.

I have a 2001 Supercrew XLT. Premium sound is, I suppose, okay for people who aren't too picky about sound, but I need more clarity at real volume. I'm not huge on big subwoofers, but a tasty small one might be an option.

I think an amp with 40 x 4 would be about right for me at this point, along with four new speakers.

What are the speaker sizes for the front and back?

Front and rears are 6x9 (5 x 7's will also fit). And there is a TON of room in the front doors. I think it goes about 1/2 mile deep!

I have same opinion as you though. Not looking for huge subs (like 4 10" with gigawatss pushing them....), I just need some volume and more importantly, a bit of CLEAN kick for my Bob Marley.

Take it from me, just replaceing the head won't be enough.

Not to be nit picky CCarrara but I think the stock speaks are 6X8's. Just wanted to clarify in case someone out there buys a pair of 6X9's and wonder why don't fit. 5X7's will drop right in.

Actually, the stock speaker (I just measured mine from a 01 F150) is 5X7 and most 6X8 will just drop in.

5X7 and 6X8's same thing!!!!!!1

You show up at your local "shop" and ask for a 6X8....you'll get a 5X7!

And I wouldn't go as far a saying that the mounting depth is a "Mile" deep, I have my Polk Mids in my front doors and I had to build em out nearly .75", 99% of the 5X7's on the market will fit just fine, however if you move to a higher end mid or component set you may encounter the magnet smacking the window regulator.

ENJOY

Would you guys stop being so picky!!

Yeah, they are the same speaker sizes, the only difference is the 6x8 version has and extra screw whole.

And Husker, I didn't say they were a "mile deep"!! I said "1/2 mile deep"!! Comon, get it straight!! How did ya get that temperature thingy in you picture? Very cool!!

Actually some companies make true 6 x 8 speakers with larger cones than the 5 x 7 models. If I showed up at my local shop and asked for 6 x 8s and they gave me 5 x 7s I would find another shop. Ford locations are 6 x 8. Some companies add mounting tabs to their 5 x 7 models to line up with the 6 x 8 screw holes.

Why can't we all just get along....LOL. I have seen some 6X8's that will not drop in. I would have had to space the MB's out a little bit to get them to clear but since I had to have adapters anyway it was not that big a deal

For those who haven't swapped out speakers .... here are some pix ... my component mid-range interferred with the front windows when mounted flush - - had to install an adapter to move the speaker towards the interior. The front speakers on the 2001 SCrew are not two-way as I said in an earlier post.
