If you are getting the pieces to do the work, you could mount it anywhere you want.
Depending on the seat confg. & the truck, it is normally mounted behind the rear seat on a extended cab or super crew with bench front seats, or can be mounted in the center console if you have the captians chairs.
In my 01 SuperCrew, I mounted mine in the center console, but not in the side like it would have come from Ford.
The biggest thing I would not like about the behind the sear mount is that you have to get out to change the CD's in the changer.

With the adapter cable, I could have mounted the changer just about anywhere I wanted as it was long enough.
