I went to a local junkyard and pulled a dual efan setup out of a 1996-1999 Mercury Sable. Everything is in good running order and from what I know these fans are set up as pullers. Well I get back to the house and get the stock mechanical fan off and I go to mock fit the fans and find out I can't set them up as pullers because the hub of the efans sticks out about half an inch past the shroud. So if I tried to mount them as pullers the hub of the fan would've been in full contact with the radiator and would have made it so when the fans tried to kick on, there would've been no way they could spin due to the pressure from the mounting rods holding pressure. I have them mounted so they actually pull air from the engine bay and push it through the radiator towards the front of the truck because this was the only way I could mount them. My question is this basically, is this bad and will it cause me problems? I know alot of people say that as long as you don't block the front of the radiator you'll be fine because alot of cooling will coming from just driving. I asked this same question over at V6F150.com and nobody is giving me an answer and I need to get this resolved because worrying sucks!
Yes you will have problems. You want cool outside air to pass thru the rad. Not hot engine bay air. If the fans do come on while driving they will be fighting the air coming in the front of the vehicle.
I imagine I could space them by fabbing up some spacers. I need to think up something I can use as spacers. I need them to be 1/2 - 3/4" thick and probably the size of a quarter each. I don't want to use washers, preferably a hard plastic.
This is on a V6 motor by the way. I have a buddy who says his efans only cut on while he is idling so I figure if I can't fab up the spacers immediately I should be ok for a little bit.
You said mounting rods. Are mounting them by using rods going thru the rad fins? If so that is a bad idea. Have seen many postings about the rods rubbing holes in the rad tubes causing leaks.
Well if anything, I'll just go back to the junkyard and snag one of the 18" fans out of a Thunderbird..this time I'll check the thing out before getting super giddy about it. I'll retrofit these fans to make them work. Once I get the bigger fan mounted and running I'll just sell my current ones. It shouldn't be too much of a PITA to swap out because A.)Mechanical fan will be already out and B.)Controller is already wired up. Undo the old fan, clip the two wires, swap the fans out, rewire the single fan.
It'll work even though they are Ford fans? I said I could reverse the polarity of the fans to Raptor and he said that wouldn't work. I told him I was pretty sure it would work.
well I bought a used fan out of a 03 crown vic police car, seems pretty powerfull but you would have to remove the rad and do some cutting and making of brackets to ke it fit, but the fan is still 2 inches too tall for our trucks, that's why i installed a tarus fan.
