Question Backup Lights

I've noticed that my backup lights don't illuminate very well and I've seen some guys add on additional backup lights on their hitch or under their bumper. Anybody have any experience with this? Brand names and wattage info would be a lot of help. Thanks! R.

I'm thinkin the same thing you are. I'm fixing to mount some 55 watt aftermarket driving lights on my reciver hitch, guess that will give me plenty of back-up light.

Mudder- I've though about that too. I think the aftermarket backup lights may be to wimpy. Tell ya what... you do it first and let us know how it works out. Yikes, I guess you'll be mounting that auxillary generator in you bed to power up all that candlepower, eh?

I installed a pair of Blazer aux backup lights. Got them at Pep Boys for 30 bucks.
They strap onto the receiver hitch bar with cable straps. Very easy to wire to backup lights. They put out 55 watts halogen. They help add more light but I also added the halogen replacements for the factory backup lights. Helped a little more but I would like to have even more light. I have to back a boat trailer down a very dark driveway that curves to put the boat into the garage. So I like alot of light. You might want to really consider a brighter driving light or an off road light if you need it. For general around town use they are fine. They look pretty cool when they come on too!

i tried the new back up bulbs for 20 bucks and they are a waste of money...bought 2 small oval driving lights which i mounted to my reece hitch with hose clamps...u cant see the hose clamps btw....anyhow just havent wired them yet....i will use a switch cause dont want them to come on all the time and dont know if the back up light switch could handle the extra lights...the bulbs i tried first are 55 watts...the new driving lights are also 55 watts but are 10 times brighter..will get them wired sometimes this weekend....

FasFreddy-

That's what I want to do, wire the add-on backups independant of the regular backups. Lemme know how you did it and how you like 'em. R.

I've got two 55 watt backup lights mounted in existing holes in the bumper. I just removed the bolt and used the light's new bolt and nut in its place. No Holes to drill. I ran power from the Battery and I have a relay thats hooked to the existing reverse lights that switches the relay open. So I'm not pulling power away from the factory lights.

I just looked here the other day to see what folks are doing. I did not find much, but here is what I did.

Got a pair of backup lights from Auto Zone for $25. The are 55 watt. THey mount on the
hitch, and seem real bright. The come with some pretty heavy duty hardware and wiring. I wired it directly into the factory backup light circuit.

Works like a charm. I can see back there now!!! For $25 you can't beat it.

I was also thinking about installing new backup lights. I thought I might wire the lights up to a male 7 way connector using the 12 volt pin for power and the backup light circuit to trip a relay. Then just leave it plugged into the trailer connector and unplug when towing. I just have to figure out how to remount the connector up and out of the way, parallel to the rear bumper.

Reavis.....i will let u know....but the relay comes with good directions.....i like the hitch instead of the bumper because the lights sit under and not as exposed...dont really like the lights to show...

Cool

I have KC Highlite back-up lights # 517. They are 55w, they work very well and will blind a blind person (no pun intended). I don't have a pic yet on my web site, but if you want to see how I installed them on my truck e-mail me at;
lmaox10@hotmail.com and I will gladly send you a pic.

Thumbs up

Hey farmboy I bought the lights from autozone
like you were talking about for $25.00 today.
It took less than an hour to install them on the hitch bar. I wired them directly into the truck backup light and they work great. Thanks for the tip!!!

I bought the Autozone backup lights that attach to the hitch about a year ago. They were very easy to install and I like how they look, but I wish they were a little brighter.

I also managed to run an extra wire to my cab that is connected to a switch so I can turn them on w/o putting the truck in reverse.
