What is the stock t-case for an '03 F150 with the fx4 and 5.4 Triton motor? My truck has that rubbish ESOF system, and I am curious about what t-cases I can mount to my tranny, as well as, what the stock t-case is for my application. Also, please correct me if I am wrong, but it is my understanding that Ford switched to the 4R75W tranny in '03 - is this correct?
Cheers mate,

If you have a Super cab or regular cab you have a 4R70W if you have a super crew you have a 4R100. I believe the Transfer case is a borg warner 44-06 (or something like that). The transfer case is not the problem on the truck, it's the front axle / shaft. If you want to cure your problems for about 150 bucks, go out and buy the pull cable conversion like I did. Never had a problem and I had 2wd low which was nice.
4r75w came in the 5.4L trucks with the newer body style (2004)
as for which case you have: not sure, can try checking for ya tomorrow at work.
Cases that you can swap in: choices are endless. Deoends more on your fab skills. Advanced Adapters makes adapter plates for almost any combo you can think of. One guy on this site a LONG time ago, swapped in a Atlas into a newer F150. That guy was my hero!

Atlas in a new F150... wow that is bad! I want one!
I was just underneath the truck and I have a 14 bolt transmission pan, so wouldn't that make it a 4r70w? Also it has the trans code U so everything I have read tells me that it would be a 4r70w - kind of weird though being a Super Crew , Fx4, and 5.4 for it to have the lighter duty transmission.
Before that, the 4r70w was used on most of the trucks
Thanks for the info. Is there a significant difference between the two transmission (the 4R100 and the 4R70w) in terms of strength and dependability? What can/should I do to beef up my tranny so it can survive some heavier offroad use? Now to get back to the heart of the matter, do you know what the stock t-case for my truck would be?
the 4R100 is good up to 1000 ft lbs of torque, while the 4R70W is good up to abouut 700 ft lbs. your stock transfer case is the Borg Warner 4406. Swapping to the 4R100 is not an easy swap. You would also need a new computer, and torsion bars that are about 6'' longer so that they will clear the longer transmission. There are other many other little pitfalls as well. You would be best to beef up your existing transmission. The only 97-03 trucks that came stock w/ the 4R100 were the 7700 package (4WD version) and the Lightning (2WD version) no supercrews came equipped w/ the 4R100.

My supercrew had a 4R100 in it from the factory, no question about it. As for your number of what they can take, I'd be hard pressed to find anyone who would agree with your torque ratings. A 4R100 in stock form would maybe handle 550. Just look at all the diesels that fry them with just a tuner. Add some hp to a lightning and you've toasted it. 550 is the max i'd say it could take. a 4R70W is much worse off then that. I'd say it could take 400 or a bit more. the 4R70W is a light duty car trans that for sapped in their 1/2 tons. It's not a great trans or even a good one for towing. I can tell you most people would agree so would ford since they went to a 4R75W in their 1/2 tons.
Actually according to Ford's ratings the 4R100 is supposed to be good to 1000lb/ft of torque. Thats a big supposed to be, its actually about 600-700. The stock 02 7.3L for example puts out 525lb/ft of torque. A tuner on the tow setting easily puts it over 600lb/ft going through the trans, and they typically don't blow the trans out. Its when you get up to the 100hp+ race tunes that problems show up. These are adding around 150+lb/ft of torque which gives you around 675 total going through the trans. I agree though that its nowhere near good enough to handle 1000 like they say.
The 4R70W is also a very poor trans. I toasted one in my old 97 F150 with just 35s and 3.55 gears. I took them off and went back to 285s and did some light towing (after the rebuild) and the trans was going south again when I traded it. I'd only rank it about a single notch above the infamous A4LD.

Powerstroke: What would be a good swap for the 4R70w ? This trans has me worried anytime I work my truck. I know just how ****ty it is, and not looking for a trans failure while towing my Zuki, and being 300 miles from home, or any city for that matter.
Whats a good, reliable swap ? Anything thats a direct bolt in ? Any known upgrades for my current trans ?
Mercedes Tech, you should have the 4R75W. Its power limit lies somewhere between the 4R70W and the 4R100. Like I said, no tranny will be an easy swap. Ford's computers are ultimately based on the transmission it came equipped with, it is not something that can be compensated for via tuning. Thus, a computer swap is required as well. The mechanical troubles aside, you're asking for a lot of electronics hell waiting for you as well.
Factory Tech used to have the 4R70W Monster Box, but I don't know if they even make that anymore. At any rate Factory Tech's quality isn't anywhere near what it was.
