Info on VA

Well guys I'm thinking of possable relocating to VA not 100% sure yet but been looking at some jobs in the state. I would like some info such as what is the state income tax rate the cost to get tags for my truck and other general info like that about the state. I mainly would like to be in or near the Mountains like the Roanoke area but open to anywhere in the state.

Try "tidewater Va." on the forums. There are a few that stay tuned in to that. Good Luck!

I'm in the Roanoke area (Blue Ridge) and love it

I originally looked in NC for a house, damn did it build up fast in that state! I wanted the mountains as well. Found a nice house in Blue Ridge w/ 30 acres and buts up to the Jefferson National Forrest (about 20-30 minutes away from Roanoke). Plenty of mountains, Bedford County is the Deer hunting capitol of the state and plenty of fishing. I know the papers have a lot of jobs in the area and the Roanoke area is growing... (not too big I hope). I'm in the Military and have 4 years till I retire, but I have no complaints since I moved here. Im stationed in Norfolk, few hours drive away.

If Bedford and Botetourt Counties grow too big, I'll move to Craig County.

Zip me a email, I could send you some local realestate links. I found this place on the internet and could refer you to a good agent, took good care of me.

Zipcode for my area is 24064 if you want to look around via internet.

Goodluck

Our income tax rate is 5.75%

To register vehicles in VA Tags are $29.00 per yr, there is also a State Inspection sticker, $15 per yr.

Personal Property taxes on Private vehicles....
Where do I begin?
We were supposed to end it but it got froze at a 70% rebate on the first $25k
Since then the rebate "pot' was frozen so the effective rebate is down to about 60%.
Example you have a $25,000 car.
The first 60% is tax free which means you now have $10,000 car and are taxed at that value semi-annual (half&half).
Don't know off the top of my head what the PP tax rate is....

Thanks Guys I'm still in the looking and thinking about process on it. If my current employer don't do as they say they are going to do its just a matter of time before I head off somewhere else. The jobs in my field don't pay as much as they do in the Virginia and other area along the east coast so that is why I'm thinking of moving out that way.

A couple more questions what is the sales tax rate in VA. Do you pay sales tax on food I know some states don't, but TN is the highest sales taxed state on food almost 9% in most counties as they add there part to the state part.

Sales tax is really 5% (4 State + 1 Local)
I don't know of any locality which isn't charging their 1%.
They may be out there but, I haven't found one.

When you ask about food do you mean Grocery store food or dining out food?
Big difference.
Grocery stores are the regular 5% but, dining out the localities have their hand in your pocket and some tourists areas are grabbing 11%(total).

You never know how big a bite, til you get the bill and realize you musta drove over a city line or two.

VA isn't a bad place to be. Currently in Noroflk we're figting sky high property taxes though. Our current mil rate is 1.27, but the city manager proposed a new rate of 1.17.
