Good Morning JMC
I have not been on line for better than a year now. Last post was in regards to the new Gyphon Controller I bought in Jan 2011. So the old 1999 F150 4.6 has made it another year but it is ready to die any day now. 190,000 mile on it. It still runs good the gas milage still stinks and the power is gone. So now it is really time to step back and say do I buy a newer truck, do I rebuild the 4.6 or do I replace it with a 5.4. You really seem to be the GRU of swaps so your opinion is valuable. I am looking for more gas milage in the new days of $5 gasoline. You have stated that the 1999 5.4 is the best engine to swap to. Is this still the case? Can I now swap to a 2006 or newer engine? ANy other suggestions would be appreciated. I think that I am budgetting around 6K to make all of the modification. This does not include any labor. Am I way off base and should just bite the bullet and go buy a newer used truck to get a better overal package?
Again your input is appreciated.

Hey man,
From what I've so far read, you seem to know your stuff regarding the Lightnings...I'm about to buy a custom SVT, totally stock except for the engine swap, it now has a chevy 383 stroker, TCI 350 turbo transmission and a 3000 stall converter. First of all,how does that setup sound to you , but the question is about the instrument panel.
With the swap, the person who did this swap was not able to use the panel , only for gas gauge, and installed external gauges.
I'd love to keep it stock-looking and be able to use the speedometer, will this be possible?
thanks
There are 3 wire harnesses in the engine compartment. The PCM 104 pin connector splits into 3 sections; Engine, Transmission and Body. The body harness goes to the fuse box and to the firewall just behind the fuse box. A 1999 PCM will need a 1999 Body harness. All of the F-150s covered by the swap notes have 3 connectors at the firewall. The cab side of the connector has one big connector that receives the 3 connectors from the engine compartment. You will need all 3 of the harnesses from a 1999 5.4 donor truck to male this work, Including the fuse box. The CAB portion of the harness should be OK.
i recently did an engine swap on a 99 f150 it had a 4.2 5 speed i went to 5.4 everything went together great i have a friend that works at my local dealership that told me i shouldnt have to change the main pcm harness well i have figured out thats not true my question is can i use a wiring harness from a 99 f150 with a 4.6 to run this engine and if so can i use the 5.4 pcm that i have
They should work. Depending on the heads you presently have you may need the Romeo valve covers. If you have a 4.6 the odds are that you have Romeo heads. If you have a 5.4 they are normally Windsor heads and the valve covers will not bolt up.
The collector is at a slightly different angle. The 4.6 is a little narrower and shorter. A competent exhaust shop can fab up some pipe to fix the problem.
Hey JMC, i was wondering if you would be able to tell me the difference between the 5.4 and 4.6l exhaust manifolds, do they angle out differently, so that i would have to change my exhaust?
