Hello, I am also having the same problem with the grinding noise. I was reading through your forum talking about the IWE solenoids. I have the grinding noise with no clunk, I can feel the grinding so to speak through the accelerator, if I take my foot off teh accelerator and slow the truck down it goes away. As soon as I accelerate it comes back. Also I haven't ran codes on my 05 f150 but I read that if you get codes C1979 or C1980 my 4WDH light will be inop. I was able to put it into 4WD in my driveway but the 4WDH light was operative. This is supposedly another sign your IWE solenoid is damaged? I am asssuming? I am about to test drive my truck starting in 2WD when I hear the noise I will flip it to 4WD to see if my grinding noise goes away. Then I am going to try to unplug the power source while driving in 2WD to see if it goes away for the time being. I have had this grinding problem for about 2 years and now have the time to fix it. What I want to ask you is, if I have had this problem for over two years, is it likely that I have damage to my front hubs or possibly the 4x4 actuators? I'm trying to do most maintenance in my driveway, I hate going to the dealer with these issues. Last time I brought it up with the mechanic he told me he has never heard of this and I must be making it up. Hmm. Thank you for any info you can provide.
