Wink change ok

I did a first time fuel filter change a few days ago with a $4.00 plastic (split disk with cylinder) tool by Dorman. The F150 sat for 2 nites (and a day) and I only took off the gas cap for a minute or so to relieve any pressure. I wore safety glasses and latex(?) work gloves. Very little fuel dripped out and I kept the filter as horizontal as I could. All went smoothly.

Wanted to say THANKS for this GREAT site!!!! You guys are the *****!!!

Got my filter at Advance Auto Parts here in Lexington Ky for $7.99. (I had to give them the part number for the filter FG-986B) The tool was $5.99 AmPro brand part number T70046, for the Ford A/C line and fuel filter removal tool. Fit's sizes A=3/4", B=5/8", C=1/2" D=3/8" hoses.

No telling where some of would be without the GREAT folks we have on this site!!

Thank you again, Clonetek. I finally came up with some search parameters to help me find this thread and you made my job very easy. I never even read the whole thread, just the first few posts and then I printed out your picture of the tool. Took the picture up to Auto Zone and said "I need one of these" and I was on my way in a couple minutes. Took me about 5 minutes to change the fuel filter by using this forum first.

FYI
Now on 03's (anyway) you only have one safty clip up front towards the motor side. Disconnect that clip, then on the back (NO tool is needed) becuase there is this plastic clip that you just push up on and it comes disconnected from the fuel filter (and I agree with you on the dame frame rail grease, that ***** is hard to get off your hands, cloths, and anything else it gets on grrrrrr)
Anyway, I hope this ups 03 oweners a little more with this easy job!!

PS: This site is the *****s, thats fosure!!

i need to resurrect this thread, because i having troubles getting my fuel lines to release. i need to know exactly what has to be done. i have the scissors type tool, but even the smallest collet (3/8") doesn't seem to fit into the fuel line. does it actually go in? how much force has to be applied to get the snap ring to release? i know i am just missing something obvious here.

thanks,

-matt

Matt:

You will have to clamp on the tool over the fuel line and then push it (the tool) towards the fuel filter to release the clamp.

I foud that the clamp/line/filter junction was all filled up with tiny bits if sand and dirt, that prevented pushing the tool in to release the line from the filter. So, I recommend using some sort of cleaner, like brake cleaner, to get the grit out of the connection.

I think jaymz has it backwards. You clamp the tool around the nipple on the fuel filter and slide it up into the fuel line collar. Push the fuel line over the tool as you push the tool into the line, then the line will pull off the filter nipple.

Go back to the first page of this thread. The pictures there showed me how to do it.

I'm sitting here shocked that a post on changing a fuel filter is seven pages long!

Dont forget what the motorcycleMan said in a previous post

03 and 04's have a differnet rear connection where no tool is needed, just simply push the white clip up and release the line. One of the two types of tools mentioned in this thread will be needed in the front just as this thread illistrates - so to sumize

99-02 Lightnings, front and back connections will need one of the two types of tools mentioned to release theses connection
03-04 lightnings, the front only will need a tool to release the connection.

I personnaly like the plastic clips. Takes all of 15 minutes to change once you know what you are doing
