The high cost of racing (long)

What does it take financially to keep Jaguars 2 F1 cars on the road for just one season?

Brake calipers - AP Racing lithium alloy six- piston callipers
£20,000 per set, 10 sets used per year

Brake discs - Carbon Industrie or Brembo
£3,500 per set, 100 sets used per year

Brake pads
£2,000 per set, 100 sets used per year

Pedals
£1,000 per set, 12 sets used per year

Fuel tank
£10,000 each, eight used per year

Under-car plank
£850 each, 60 used per year

Bodywork
£20,000 per set, 14 used per year

Gearbox - magnesium-cased seven- speed gearbox
£65,000 each, 16 used per year

Gear ratios
£250 each, 1000 used per year

Rear wing
£15,000 each, 15 used per year - Depending on the drivers

Front wing
£3,000 each, 15 used per year - Depending on the drivers

Wheels
£3,000 per set, 12 sets used per year

Tyres
£1,500 each, 900 used per year

Steering wheels
£30,000 each, 12 used per year

Stickers
£1,000 per set, 34 sets used per year

Engine
£180,000 per race,170 used per year (rotated, 10 per race weekend) - Figure £3.06 million minimum - No warranty

Exhaust system
£6,000 per set, 40 sets used per year

Driver's seat
£2,500 each, 10 used per year - Depending on the drivers

Suspension system - Cast Titainium uprights/ carbon pushrods
£35,000 per set, 15 sets used per year

Monocoque
£90,000 each, seven used per year - Depending on the drivers

Telemetry system
£80,000 per set, constantly upgraded throughout the year - Figure 15 sets minimum

Now this is the RACE TEAM only. To be anywhere near competitve you will have to have a minmum of 1 test team as well as a engine team that will run continuously..... At great expense.

Grand total American $$$$$ is = $14,484,681.77 give or take a few cents depending on the day's exchange (£1.439400 = $1)

Toyota's new for '02 F1 team has the biggest budget, estimated to be $300 million

you didn't mention anything about the earnings?

would they really pour all this money down the drain without any positive return... I mean they have to make enough profit to keep on doing it?

When you spend over $48K on stickers......EASY.
Thanks to HSBC, Castrol, and other companies, Jaguar is set-up as its own entity from its parent - Ford. Ford does help out with the engines and wind tunnel time which is a major expense. This year they do have their own on site wind tunnel (they aren't cheap to rent or own). F1 prize money and TV royalties are a closely guarded secret(maybe performance, maybe ?), but you can bet they get alittle.
Say what you will about Nasser, but without him Ford would not be in F1. BUT, they need results bad this year or sponsors are gonna hit the road.
Eddie Irvine is Fords highest paid employee at ~ $8million/year . Could that be part of the reason he's 36 and still has 18-19 year old supermodels on his arm....maybe.
Ford didn't even know who he was!
I was lucky enough to meet Ayrton Senna (very nice person and the greatest driver of all time IMO) while I was working for a lower budget team. So, I was able to compare what tey(McLaren had and what we had. It was an eye-opener. They would bring 4 cars to each race approx. 12 engines and gearboxes. They would strip the paint off every car (used or not) after every race. They didn't want to add the extra weight of painting OVER the old paint!

Anyone have any predictions for the upcoming season? I really think JPM will give M. Shumacher a serious run for the title this year. JPM should have won more races, hopefully williams will be able to figure out their reliability problems.

I also look forward to see how kimi raikonnen (sp?) does for mclaren. He had a great rookie season, it'll be interesting to see how he does along side coultard.
