Just needs more refrigerant?

My 2004 F150 (new body style) has had some AC issues recently. The other day it was bout 80 degrees outside and i turned on the AC. I noticed the air was still warm and when I looked at the controls (i have the auto climate controls), the AC icon was not on. I manually pressed the AC button to turn on the compressor and it never came on. The AC light was lit up, but the compressor wasn't running (I got out and checked - it wasn't turning). I pressed the off button and then auto again...still, not AC light. Pressing the AC button turned the AC icon on, but the compressor won't run. Well, today, I tried it again and the compressor IS coming on now and seems to be cooling.

You think I have a simple problem of low refrigerant? AC has been fine ever since I owned it (bought the truck new in 2004), up until now. I'm tempted to go buy some refrigerant and try to put more in myself at home.
