'04 150 Lariat S'crew Intermittant Heat

Late last winter I noticed the heat would work intermittantly when I turned it on. When I would leave work at night and turn the heat on, it may work one night and not the next night. Either on for the whole trip or off for the whole trip with no in-between. I could crank the temperature all the way up (Electronic Control Panel) to 80 Degrees but no heat, the blower is working fine. The next day it would work just as if nothing happened. I heard that this could possibly be the blend door...is there a foolproof way to know this without going to the Dealer and spending several Hundred $$$ for Diag and Repair?
I have a decent mechanical aptitude if I knew it was the blend door or some other component and had pretty decent intructions on dash removal(either here or Haynes) I would take a chance on repairing it myself.
Any Suggestions.
Thanx!
