Having problems with 2004 Exp A/C

We have been having an issue with the A/C intermittantly for the past year or so. It will go a period of time working great with no problems, then for no reason the problems begin. What happens is when you start it up the compressor will not spin, then after driving a bit it will suddenly start working and when it is working it works great. Then after sitting a while, it does the same thing...not work for several miles then poof it works again. then as mysteriously as it began, it goes away for a couple months but always comes back.

Lately it is taking longer and longer for the compressor to startup so it is time to figure out what is wrong.

Any ideas? I was thinking the clutch may be sticking.

Thanks,

barry
