1991 f150 with no heat in the cabin

My husband's f150 does not have heat in the cabin anymore. The temp gauge seems to read normal, but no heat. He's not sure what could be wrong, and before we go spending possibly hundreds of dollars to find out what could be the cause, do any of you experts here have an idea? Thanks. tammy
