AC compressor problem-1995 F150
302, auto, 4x4, etc.
I smelled smoke in the cab the other day running AC. It stopped almost as soon as it started. Happened again yesterday and I was able to see a problem w/ the compressor. Looks like the pulley is ok, but the inner part (clutch?) is seizing up intermittently...for a few seconds, then it spins for a while and does it again.
I don't see any signs of leakage. I get nice cold air. What am I seeing? I'm guessing that it's the clutch for the compressor... seizing and smoking.
If this is the case, what am I looking at repair/replacement-wise? I'd hate to replace the whole compressor, since the unit seems fine otherwise, and replacement won't be all that cheap. Can the clutch be replaced without going thru the fun of draining/recharging the system, etc?
