HVAC making me sick

2000 Expedition 4wd w/ manual HVAC controls.

I bought this truck used and there is no real odors present in the truck. No sign of it being a "smoker" car.

I turn on the HVAC and I start getting sick. Headaches, sneezing, watery eyes. It is worse in heating mode than in A/C.

Anybody ever heard of this phenomenon?

Is there a fix?

Very poss. that you are sensitive to mold or mildew. The exap. box that the heater core/A/C evap. is in can sometimes retain a very small amount of water/ moisture that can breed mold and mildew. when the HVAC comes on the blower can put spores into the cabin air and cause you to have an allerigc reaction. I would search the threads here and find one regarding cleaning the box under the dash. I know some people back flush it through the drain in the firewall but you might be able to find a better way.

One method you can try is to spray Lysol in the air intake for the HVAC system. With the mode selector dial on AC, and fan on high, spray Lysol into the vent opening just behind the hood. (the plastic grill). This should help kill some mold if it is present.
Good luck.

find a shop that can perform a BG fridgie fresh service it will remove all mold and clean out the whole system and then never run the HVAC (Or any mode that runs the a/c compressor) when you have your windows down. it puts way to much moisture in the system and promotes mold growth.

do an internet search on BG Products and you should be able to find a shop near you.
