Glad to be back! Need some HU Nav advice

First of all I will say I am glad to be back. Last year when gas was $4 a gallon I traded my 05 Lariat for an 08 Honda. Big mistake! The Honda was a nice vehicle but for my 6'7" 300 lbs it was just a bit too small. Besides my son said it was a girlie truck. Friday I came home in a Loaded FX4 Crew Cab which is much more my style.

Anyway, I want to install either a Kenwood or Pioneer Head Unit with Nav and rear view. I have peeled through the past threads and just confused myself.

Will I need to tap into the speedometer wire? If so how will I find it?

Same question with the reverse light wire.

Is there anything else I need to be aware of? Is one brand easier to install than the other?

I have the 6 disc CD/MP3 changer with satallite but no subwoofer.

Any help and advice will be appreciated.

I just changed out my HU for the Kenwood 5120. Install was a snap. Bought it from Crutchfield so I also got the plug n play wiring harness and detailed instructions. No, there was no tapping into any speedo wires. I already had a reverse camera installed and it plugged right into the Kenwood. I too wondered where the reverse wire was and its color. On another thread I got black with purple stripe tnat is nder the driver's side kick panel - tapped into it but no joy. I've since seen a thread where it was said to be the purple wire - same location. I'm not gonna bother with it. All I have to do is push a button and the rear camera comes on. I don't feel the need for auto reverse all the time.

Love the unit. The 5120 is an older unit, newer models are available - a 7120 and 8120 I think, but I was able to get it, the iPod adapter, steering controls adapter and Sirrius receiver all for less than $800.

Good luck!

I just got done installing about a month ago the JVC KW-NX7000 along with the XM and Bluetooth adapters. I was able to get everything delivered to my door for just under $900.

You don't need to tap a speedo wire on any unit that I am aware of. The GPS sensor itself calculates your speed. The more satellites it finds, the more accurate your speed and position are.

I don't use a backup cam so I can't help you on the reverse wire, but I'm sure someone can chime in.

I went with the JVC because of it's price and expandability later on if I need a cam or rear screens or anything liek that. It is also the only double din deck out there right now that has a detachable face. I travel a lot with work and with it being parked out at hotels a lot, I needed something a little more secure.

Check out my gallery if you want to see pictures of it. Good luck!

Pioneer or Kenwood.

What year?

VSS is Gray/Black in the harness (97-08)
Reverse is Black/Pink low in the DKP (04-08)

smokin deal is WM an authorized kenwood dealer?

I am in the process of installing my 5120 now. just did the backup cam wiring hook up for an 08.

I have read the wire is in the drivers kick panel.

Some run the wire all the way to the reverse lamp.

Based on advise I got i tapped in near the fuse block find the black wire with the pink stripe for 08 (I would test to make sure you have the correct wire).

I tapped it into a pig tail that I made with two female plugs to hook up cam and hu reverse wire feed.

I still need to tap a switched 12v source for the cam - not sure where to tap that just yet...
