Im ready to get new a head unit, speakers and subs installed in my 03 supercrew but have no clue about this kinda stuff. Whats a good setup for a fairly good price? (head unit, door speakers and 2 subs) Name brands would be nice to so I know a little bit when I go to talk to the stereo guy.
I'd say hit up Crutchfield's website from the comfort of your home. Look at all the various head units and speakers, find one you like and ask about it here. There's a lot of dudes here who know their stuff about these things (like Low e Red), I'm sure they'll steer you right.
I ain't an audiophile by no means, but I made a huge difference overall by replacing the stock door speakers (I used some cheap Pioneers I bought from WalMart, they were like $60/pair) and the stock head unit (I have a Pioneer AVIC-D2). With the time, effort and dollars I've invested, it sounds fantastic to my ears, I couldn't be any happier with it. It amazed me what a big difference a good (better) head unit and some good (better) door speakers can make.

Thanks for the replys guys.. Im mainly lookin for a better overall sound and some more thump but nothing outragious. As for price range, I hope to not go over a grand if possible. I listen to a varity from country to rap and im not to serious about music, I just want something better than stock.

i am assuming you want this set up under the seat? so your looking for a good mix of sound quality and thump? what features do you want on your head unit because that will make a huge difference how much you have to spend in other departments, and also are you installing it yourself and building the boxes yourself? if not does that 1k include the labor and install?
Ehh theres a HELL OF A LOT BETTER out there for cheaper.
OP, whats your budget? What are you looking to gain from this system? What music are you listening to?
and yes finally haha, i am not a huge fan of jl dont get me wrong they are a damn good subwoofer but i would rather get my hands on an FI for about half the price

A grand not including install.... As for the head unit, nothing to fancy, ipod hookup and nice lil display. And I plan on having the subs under the rear seat as it is a supercrew.

okay well you can get a nice alpine or pioneer head unit, both of them typically have built in eq's(nicer models) also i have 2 12" kicker cvr's and i absolutely love them, get an amp to match and maybe some nice alpine components and an amp
The headunit is deffinitly the place to start. For me, the choice was easy...pioneer. IMO, easier to control then the alpines, and look a helluva lot cleaner looking once installed. The ipod controls are awesome, especially on the newer units. Hell, the new AVIC F900 allows you to control your ipod by voice, just like ford's sync. Budget speakers, Alpine Type S or Infinity Reference are decent. Im sure the polk ones are decent too, ive just never had the chance to listen to them personally.

ya i forgot to mention that, i have 6.5" infinity reference in my front doors and i love them, they sound so clean, and i love the fact that you can rotate the tweeter to aim at the listener
Pioneer makes great HUs, but some of them have an RCA noise problem. This can be fixed by a pioneer warranty shop (it had to be done to my 880PRS). But outside of that, great units.
I'd look into some nice component speakers for up front, a solid 2 channel amp to run them passive, and some basic 5x7s to run in the rear off the head unit for slight rear fill. If you want mainstream brands, look at Alpine Type R 6.5" or Polk Audio MOMO 6.5" for nice budget speakers. The higher end pioneers are pretty solid too. Stay away from Infinity.
Then get a pair of 10" subwoofers and a mono amp to run them. Kickers are popular, but they aren't the best sounding woofers out there (in fact, far from it). They sound pretty sloppy most of the time. I recommend not going with a top name brand, i'd look into Image Dynamics, Dayton, Elemental Designs etc. They all make nice 10" subs that will fit under the seat.

I love how everyone hates on infinity! makes me feel special.
Speaking of pioneer components, i was plesently impressed with the TS series 6 1/2's that we carry in the store. Not a bad lil speaker.

Usually they stuff about half price. And they are authorized internet dealer for most brands they sell.
Kinda sucks me saying that since I work in car audio.
Look at Image Dynamics CTX series speakers if you don't want to spend a whole lot, but they sound better than their price point. I have been running Image Dynamics CX series speakers in my current vehicle for 8 years and only in the last month or so has a tweeter started to act up, so I can vouch for their quality. Also Pioneer TSD ( make sure it has the "d" and not "A" or "G" after the TS ).
As far as in-dash video screens, go Pioneer or Kenwood. Pioneer's in-dash navigation is beyond anything else that anyone else has. Kenwoods are just good solid units that don't have any problems.

Woofersetc.com is not an authorized dealer but for maybe 3 things. Trust me they are a known transshipper as well as have pending lawsuits from many companies for fraud and unauthorized use of intellectual copyrights.
