Factory Head Unit-Will it work?

I want to keep my factory head unit cause of my steering wheel controls. Is there any way i can hookup a amp to the factory wiring? or would putting in new speakers do the trick? The stock system in my lariat sucks.
thanks for your help.

Yup. I just added 4 door speakers, a 10" sub, and a 600w amp to my factory HU. Use the search and lo, you will find the answers you seek, my son......

Couple of options arise. Either LOC and amps, add new spkrs or get a new HU and buy the SWC repeater. That piece will change the SWC signal into a signal that the new hu understands. Therefor you keep your steering wheel controls.

Ok, first off, I went throught the same thing in my truck. I wanted to keep the factory steering controls also. I started by buying aftermarket speakers. The sound got even worse because the stock headunit doesnt put out enough power to effectively drive aftermarket speakers. Trust me, put in an aftermarket headunit. I put in the alpine cda-9885 w/fullspeed ipod, and love it. I purchase the pac-swi device so that I could still use the steering wheel controls and it works good. Alot of people will bash the pac-swi saying that it is too slow and often doesnt work. Mine works just as it should.

Even though you say you wont, you will probably get the itch to keep upgrading, so starting out with a good headunit is only going to help. That way you can expand to highs/mids amps, subs, etc...

Let me know if you need anything else,
