DIY install - Pioneer AVIC-D3 in a 2006 F-150 King Ranch?
Reviews seem to indicate the above is a good head unit and nav system, long as you can live with the one slot limitation. My question is if I should attempt the install by myself or not, just looking for opinions. I can get it installed for between $0 and $250 ... not sure what price to put on my aggravation [lol]
The install is fairly straightforward. I had mine installed at the place I bought it just because I got free installation with my purchase, but I ended up tearing it out anyway so that I could do the bypass. If you've ever installed a head unit before, you shouldn't be in for any surprises...all the wires you need are easily accessible and the dash panel pops off really easily. The only exception is the reverse wire, but I didn't bother with that since I don't have a camera and don't plan on getting one.
Make sure you buy the adapter harness with the RCAs if you have the factory subwoofer. You'll also want to consider splicing in a 5k resistor on the remote wire to stop the start-up pop.
Do some searches on here and check out www.avic411.com...you should be able to find everything you need.

And yes, check out AVIC411.com - it will show you how to bypass the security feature of having to set the parking break in order to utilize the NAV.

I think you're thinking of the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) wire. That increases the accuracy of the nav by calculating how far you've gone if the signal drops out and estimates your new location on the map.
Do your home work read everything you can and then plan a day when you can concetrate on nothing else untill job is finished. Ever time I have paid to have something installed I ended up having to pull back out and fix a problem where they did not make a connection good or something and such.

I am an experienced car audio installer but could you brief me on this? I took a quick glimpse but could find any screws to remove the center console. Do I need to remove the belly pan and glove box to get to them?

Welcome! its actually really easy to get to your head-unit. carefully use a screw driver or flathead to pop off the plastic trim surrounding the head unit. then its just four small screws and its out!
Hey HawgPhixer! How are you getting ur D3 to line up right? My trucks dash looks just like urs, I have the 06 STX. But the radio is sitting to back in the dash. And when I put that trim piece on there like urs the bottom sticks out to much..
