I have the same question on my '99. It's not premium though.. that would utilize four plugs if I'm remembering correctly...

Problem is the walmart selection doesn't match.. so no late night switcheroo for me this evening... Got the right dash kit though!

What a Make a System "Premium"

As best as I can tell a "Premium" Ford system is one which uses an external amplifier.

A simple way to tell whether you have a premium system or not is to look at the wiring coming off the plugs which fit in the back of the OEM head unit. If you can't find 8 wires of the following colors:

org/lt grn
lt blu/wht
gry/lt blu
tan/yel
wht/lt grn
dk grn/org
org/red
brn/pnk

then you have a "Premium" system. These are the wiring colors for the speaker connections. You have two options for a wiring harness. You can either wire to integrate into the OEM amplifier or you can bypass the OEM amplifier. If you decide to integrate into the factory amplifier, you may or may not find a wiring harness to do this, and it may or may not work without a amplifier integration box. If you decide to bypass the factory amplifier, then the wiring harness for the base model OEM head unit will probably work. You will have to find a modular plug with the wiring colors for the speakers. One of the plugs from the wiring adapter you get will most likely plug into this connector.
