Question HU Display

Ok I have an 00 150 XLT with what I would guess is just a plain jane HU. About two months ago the display started to fade, well now it is not on at all. The unit works fine both in FM and CD. Is there any way to repair this? The dealer told me $300 to repair or replace the unit depending on if it is repairable or not. What are my options?

$300 is insane for a repair job. Be alot cheaper and easy enough to order a wire harness adapter, installation kit, and a new headunit. Shoot I bet for a standard CD player you could do that for about $200.

If you check ebay you might get a OEM radio for cheap as well.

I have replaced display lights in many car radios. I used to go to pawn shops and buy them for $10-$15 w/ no display, replace bulbs, and sell for $50.

Often the bulb socket was some sort of proprietary plug, so I would remove the bulb, go to a local electronics shop, match it up as close as possible, and then solder the bulb directly to the board. Cost avg .10-.15 cents.

If you can solder half decent its really no biggie. Just take your time when taking the unit apart and pay attention. At this point you have nothing to lose so why not try it?

Good Luck.

Read this thread - Factory Radio LED out and static

There are some poor solder connections on the power supply board for the display module. Easy to fix, if you have soldering skills. I have repaired several of these - it really is a 30 minute job, if you are OK with a soldering iron...

If not, my offer still stands...

That is insane!

I have a Kenwood CD/MP3 player in my 99 F-150 now that I am removing when it gets traded in. It already has everything that you will need to install it into your 2000 (wiring harnesses, adaptor, etc...).

$100 plus shipping and it is yours. E-Mail or PM me for more info.
