Using factory sub with Pioneer H/U

Okay, I got around to installing my Pioneer AVH-P6800DVD head unit this afternoon. All went well with the harnesses I got from Crutchfield. One harness allows use of the factory sub via a pair of RCA's and two wires you connect to the amp turn-on wire.

Well, I turn the radio on and hear an abnoxious noise through the sub. It lasts less than a second, but it is somewhat loud. I tried moving the wires from the amp turn-on wire to the red switched power. Now the noise will appear when the key is turned vice until the radio is turned on, so I moved them back to the original wire.

I called Crutchfield tech support and was told this is a common problem with the new FoMoCo vehicles. It appears Ford uses a 5 volt singal to turn on the sub. When using an aftermarket H/U, 12 volts are going through to turn on the sub - hence the noise. The solution is to use a 12v step-down to 5v. The Crutchfield rep said they were very easy to install and cost about $1.59.

Now, has anyone else encountered this problem? If so, what solution did you use?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Yep had it with my old panasonic unit, as well as my Avic Z2. I will be getting the 12v step-down to 5v this week as i just installed the Avic yesterday.

In the wiring harness for the sub, did you put both wires as the remote turn on for the audiophile sub?

Yes, I used both blue/white wires from the aftermarket harness to the blue/white wire on the H/U harness.

I was wondering as I haven't seen anyone talk about the noise. I removed the radio until I have what I need - just to be on the safe side.

Appreciate the response!

Did you ever get this resolved? I'm going to be doing an install in my 07 expedition limited in the next couple of weeks and would like to take care of this properly.

Thanks,

Russell

put a 1.5K ohm resister in line to the remote turn on lead and it will fix the problem.

I used a 3k OHM resistor and it works perfectly as well.

Spliced in both blue/white wires on the Metra harness to the remote turn on wire on the Pioneer unit (D3 in my case).
