DOUBLE DIN on Pioneer D-3

I need some instructions on how to install my new double din screen in my 2002 Ford F-150 supercrew. I know it can be done but i would greatly appreciate some detailed instructions on how to do it properly. Thank you

Step by step is a little difficult as this is going to be a cut-and-fit type project. I just bought the same unit for my 03 and I'm still debating installing it.

Removing the trim around the OEM radio and pulling out the radio will help you gauge the job a little better. The problem is the D3 is a little taller than the opening. You cant trim from the bottom, so you will have to trim from the top. By trimming I'm talking about the black radio bracket that holds both the OEM radio and your climate controls.

After triming that bracket to allow for the D3, you may still have an issue with the metal support bracket further into the radio opening. You should be able to see it quite easily if you have pulled the radio. If it does end up hitting it, you will have to cut it as well.

After that you will need to secure your D3, and as no one makes a proper double din in-dash kit for our years (because they are not a proper double din!) the easiest way I can see to secure the radio would be to drill through the sides of the black bracket you already trimmed and use new screws to hold the radio in place. Just be sure and watch your length on the new screws. The plastic seems more than sturdy enough, and most likely would be stronger than using a in-dash kit. Plus, if you only trimmed just enough to let the D3 slide in, you should have a snug fit already.

As far as wiring, you can either splice into the OEM harness or buy an adapter and splice into that. I would recommend the later.

I'm still debating this install myself, but I think I may return my D3 and get the new JVC KD-AVX33. In my case, I just wanted a touch-screen, and its more of a novelty for me. I dont need the DVD, Navi, etc. I don't travel much, and live 10min from work. So after I show a few friends the novelty value is gone. So for $900-$1000 thats pretty steep. What I do want is text display of my mp3s and XM radio, which the AVX33 will supply for about $400, and I don't have to get the air tools out to make it fit.

BTW, I checked online and that black bracket that you need to cut is about $69. So if you screw up it won't be too bad.

Good luck and hope this helps!

Well, the heck with it you only live once, and I can't find a in-dash kit that I like (I despise the small cubby solution). I'm going to go ahead and install it.

If you are still following this thread, I will most likely get started this Sunday and I'll take some pics to help any future people out.

Look the install is "A LOT OF FUN" I cut the bar between the climate controls and the radio housing. The trim piece will hide that. But i cut north about 1/2'' to 5/8'' and shimmed the left/right enough so i could fit the cage in. I then proceeded to trim the AVIC trim ring to fit... (More fun...) And put four pan head screws into the black support pieces on the sides. Oh and you need to take out the gold support in the back. Have fun and if you need me to walk you through it email me and ill give you my number.
