Question about Stock HU & Aux Input Tray

Hi everyone,

I have a few questions regarding the stock head unit. First a little background. I have a Black 2006 F-150 XLT Supercrew with 6.5 bed. So far I have the Roush Supercharger and the Gibson single swept side exhaust (it's nice and quiet, I LOVE it). I am trying to maintain the stock look both inside and out (a sleeper truck, if you will) so please keep this in mind. Since I opted for the stock look I am also going to keep the stock head unit.

I ordered the aux input tray from the 2007 model (total was about $47). I have the basic, single CD player with no SAT and no navigation but does have the Aux input button. Is this all I need to hook up my Zune (mp3 player) to my stereo, or will I also need a PIE adapter? Being that I am a novice in the field of car audio, would it be a simple thing for me to hook up or should I take the tray to the local stereo shop and have them hook it up and add any necessary parts?

Ok, final question, is it worth replacing the factory speakers with JL Audios, or a brand someone recommends for my application? I don't want an amp and I'm keeping the stock HU, so I'm not sure I'll even hear a difference, or will I?

Thanks in advance!

Jeff

Don't know if the Ford ordered part is needed or not, but I do have the PIE adapter on my HU and that's all that is needed for the MP3 player.

In referance to your speakers it depends on how much money you want to spend. Swaping them out will definately make a differance and find a 6x8 componet set for the front and use the factory tweeter cutout(by the window controls) and mount the tweet in there.

Thanks for the reply. I bought the tray so it would look more stock and so they wouldn't have to drill any holes.

Cost is not an issue so any recommendations on speakers would be appreciated, otherwise I'll go with JL Audio.

Thanks again for the reply.

As far as I know, you still need the FRD04-AUX PIE adapter. The AUX (CAN-BUS) requires a return from the external device before it will turn on (other than audio). Without the PIE adapter, you'd get an error like "CDDJ" when you push the AUX button, or just nothing at all. Depends on the head unit.

The stock speakers are paper cone, 6X8, 25 watt, 4 ohms. You will definitely hear an improvement in sound quality changing out the speakers. The single CD head units have more power and better sound quality than the 6CD units. I don't have a favorite brand of speaker to pimp, but for single CD units, I normally install Polk db570's or Infinity Reference/Kappa's. They have better base response than JL. JL's are more than adequate for the factory head unit, though.

The front doors should have a cut outs for component speakers. I normally prefer component speakers, but the location of the tweeter in the door is too close to the driver's ear, and sound quality (in my humble opinion) is poor no matter how much you attenuate the tweeter. I would just save my money and buy a good pair of 2 or 3 way 6X8 speakers.

No prob.

I still don't know if you will have to have the PIE and the AUX tray hopefully someone will chime in with what you need to do. My dad just got a 07 with that tray but I haven't opened his up to see if there is any additional wiring.

On the speakers I'd got with the compents up front and the standard coaxials in the rear. I just jumped on JL's website and looks like the XR570-CSi compents for the front and the XR570-CXi coaxials for the rear would be a nice matching set.

Only thing is that I don't like about the JL's is that it's not a true 6x8 from what I have read. It appears to be a 5x7 woofer with a 6x8 adapter. Regaurdless of that I bet the speakers rock!!!

Hope that helps ya out.

I have a 2007 F150. The wire runs from the plug straight into the main harness plug. The wire is covered so it is hard to see were it attaches to the harness. I think you would be better off with the PIE adapter.

I have a 04 with the single CD player as well with AUX button, without a factory subwoofer. I was wondering if I can do a swap for a factory 6 Disk MP3 player?

Wow, thanks for the replies guys! The tray should be here any day now so I'll head straight to the stereo shop to get it hooked up as soon as I get it. From what I have researched, and from what you guys have explained, I will need the PIE adapter. The role of the tray at this point will be to hook up to the PIE and the PIE to the stereo. I'll just have them replace the jack on the tray. So yes, I basically paid $47 to not drill any holes in my truck. I will update on this (WITH PICS) when it is completed.

Thanks again for the help!

Well the tray was $47 and the PIE adapter was about $107 plus tax. The stereo shop hooked up the PIE adapter to the stock head unit and ran the cable through the hole in the tray. I didn't like the stereo cable that goes into the Zune to stick out so I bought a female/female coupler from Radio Shack, connected the cable from the PIE to it, stuck double sided tape on it to hold against the frame underneath the tray and glued it all together. It holds up real good! I did not use any of the wiring that came with the tray, just the PIE, the coupler that's glued on, and the Zip Linq retractable stereo cable you see in the pic. Nothing fancy but it looks good and more importantly, it works!

What kind of wiring came with the 07 tray? How many wires? Were they labeled? I am curious to find out how the tray is wired directly to the head unit. Thanks.

There were no wires. It had pins underneath the jack that looked like somthing would plug into it. It looked just like the one in this thread:

2007 OEM Tray with auxiliary audio input jack???

Notice how you can remove the jack from the tray? I did this to add my own coupler in there that connects to the PIE.
