Wiring Harness???

when i install an aftermarket head unit, do i have to buy a special wiring harness? my cousin said when he bought just a regular wiring harness for his silverado, it cut out all the chimes, like when you open the door and the headlights are still on. i am just not sure if it goes the same for ford.
