Have you called crutchfield on this? Many don't like crutchfield, but they do have a lot of resources for updating your vehicle. They can tell you exactly what you need, of course from them, but then find the products you want wherever you want.

You might try a search on http://www.the12volt.com and then click on the forums.
That is a site for installers and what not and I'm sure that same question has been asked there or you can join the forums and ask yourself.

I know it doesn't answer the question but hopefully it will help some.

steering wheel control

what you are looking for is commonly refered to as a "SWIX" they make them 2 ways 1) with an infrared eye that works as a remote control off of your factory buttons on your steering wheel
2) and the other is a direct connect right into the back of your aftermarket head unit no remote to deal with.

you want the direct connect if you can get it check ebay

So you want a head unit and keep the steering wheel controls. Nothing new. Try searching this forum on steering wheel controls and reading the resulting posts returned on the subject.

Go to Crutchfield's website and download the manual for the different PAC SWI units and learn how they work. PAC makes specific units for Alpine SWI-ALP http://akamaipix.crutchfield.com/Man.../127SWIALP.PDF, Eclipse SWI-ECL .http://akamaipix.crutchfield.com/Man.../127SWIECL.PDF, and Pioneer/Sony (SWI-PS) http://akamaipix.crutchfield.com/Man...7/127SWIPS.PDF. The SWI-X http://akamaipix.crutchfield.com/Man...27/127SWIX.PDF is their universal unit and requires the the head unit you choose to have infrared remote control support plus you have to buy the remote control to program the SWI-X, then you have to install the SWI-X sending module in line of site of the front of the HU somehere in the cab.
