if i upgrade my HU (suggestions anyone?) would it improve the sound at all if i kept my stock speakers. i have a 05' w/ the 6 cd if that matters, i dont think its the "audiophile" one though. also, would replacing the HU do away w/ the 6 cd changer, or can that still be used w/ an aftermarket HU? thanks for your input
o i wasnt planning on using the cd changer, it was just out of curiosity. i really want a new HU for plugging my mp3 player into... so i guess the highs and bass and midrange will be about the same w/ a new HU?
A new HU will make your factory speakers sound a lot better than the stock HU. As far as an aftermarket HU, I don't know how much you want to spend or what options you're looking for, but you said MP3. If you have an iPod, then Alpines are the best. I have the CDA-9856 and I love it!
you should think about adding new speakers. I did to one of my other vehicles (2003 ford taurus) not only do they sound better, but if you put a new HU into it, the factory speakers may not be able to handle the power. most factory speakers are kinda fragile inthat sense
I put a new HU and four three-way speakers (no subs or nothin') and the sound difference with them alone was amazing
I teach, so I had help from my students, but they all said that new speakers should really be considered because of the power limitations on the factory ones

Yah im still runnin my factory speakers for now. None have blown up yet. My HU is one of the more powerful ones out there, i belive its 50x4. They will hold up, they may just not sound good without a sub. When i first crank up my truck before the amp turns on, they sound gross, but once the subs are working, you cant hear anything but mids and highs from the door speakers.

The stock speakers are paper cone, 6X8, 4 ohm, 25 watts. The factory 6CD is about 22.5 watts per channel, which is really a bit too powerful for the stock speakers. A new head unit may improve sound quality, but you won't be able to take advantage of any added power.
You can add an MP3 player to the factory head unit if it has the AUX button (and if you don't have the factory DVD system which uses this channel). The FRD04-AUX adapter costs about $80-$100.
I retained my in-dash 6CD player since a comparable after market unit is difficult to come by. If you want better sound, all you need is a better set of speakers and maybe a powered sub-woofer (get one with speaker level inputs which feeds right off if the speakers).

I have the AUX button (without the factory DVD)...where and how does this adapter plug in? That would be great if I could plug in my mp3 player to my stock system!
