Swapping OEM Head Units

If I purchase an MP3 factory head unit, will I have any issues with security?

I like to stick with the factory head units. If I can find one for a good price, I may swap my factory unit. I dont have the MP3 player and that would be a nice option. Seems easy enough to swap.

Any other issues other than a security lockout?

Make sure if you buy a 6 CD unit that the seller ships it in "SHIP MODE".

If they fail to do that the mechanism will destroy itself in transit--I had that happen and FOrd technicians (and posts on here) confirm that. Do a search to find out how to implement Ship Mode.

Otherwise it's Plug-n-Play. I upgraded to Audiophile and subwoofer. It made all the difference even with OEM speakers.

Good tip. I spotted one on Ebay with no bids, but it is rapidly climbing. May be something that I keep an eye out for a little longer term, but I'll keep looking.

Thanks for the info. Chevy's you cant swap one radio to another. Thing will lock up on you and you have to go to dealership to unlock.

I hated my stock ford head unit, and swapped it with a sony CDX-M7815X You can get them fairly cheap. They have a 24-bit converter, XMReady, AUX-IN input for an ipod, Sub out, etc!

You might want to look into something like that, unless you want to really keep the factory look.
