A few questions about changing headunits.

Guys,
I am planning swapping out my factory 6 disc headunit in my 2006 F150 for a pioneer with ipod, sirius and all the bells and whistles. Before starting I wanted to know exactly first off how to take the radio out? Do I take a flat head screwdriver and pop off the radio trim panel?

Next once im in there and get the factory radio out , what will I see?
How many connectors coming out of the factory unit?
Im guessing it would probably be best to buy the factory adaptor plug so I dont have to splice or cut any of my existing wires huh?

Im thinking there is no factory amp to worry with correct?

Thanks if anyone can help with my questions.
Im planning to get busy installing the new head unit this upcoming weekend.

you can pop it off that way just be VERY CAREFUL!!! I'm not too sure about the harnesses for the 6disc(I had the single cd) but if you don't have the factory amp, I used the Metra 70-5520 to connect to original harnes and the Metra dash kit 99-5807. Now once you get it all out you should only see see a couple of harnesses, an antenna adaptor wire and a very large open space where it all sits.

It's really very simple... caualtr basically said it all..

Just make sure you have a wiring harness (most audio retailers carry or will order the proper one for your truck) and a mounting bracket, since most decks won't fit into the stock opening as they are.

Aim for about an hour of work, start to finish. You'll cut that time in half after you've done it once.
Fords are great for this since you don't have to pull any of the dash off, like most vehicles make you do.

You will also want to have a set of wire cutter/crimpers

(Everyone has this tool laying around)
and a package of butt connectors

on hand. Just match the wires from your wiring harness that you buy to the wires from your new deck and crimp them in the butt connectors. The harness will plug into the stock plugs already in the truck, so you don't have to cut anything.

Just make sure you have everything you need before you start and it will go smoothely.

I just got an 07 f150 that replaced my 2001 f150. I have a wiring harness that is hooked up to my alpine hu that worked in the 2001. Will that work in the 07? I was wondering how you remove the stock hu in these trucks. In my old truck it was very simplistic by popping the dash cover off. I haven't figured this one out yet. Any help would be appreciated.

probably not. It's only like $10 to get a new harness and you won't have to cut any wires. Read this for trim removal:

I figured I would have to get another harness. No biggie. Thanks for the reply. Once the alarm and remote start is installed, I will be puting my system in there. Kinda tired of looking at it in the living room. ;-)
