Radio surround removal question

I remember seeing posts on how to remove the trim around the radio on the 2005's but I have a question about the clips. My dealer fixed a rattly ash tray, but did not get the trim piece on all the way. I removed the trim to fix it and noticed that the white metal clips that hold it on where still in the housing and others were on the trim piece. How do these work? Do some come off and others not? Are they supposed to stay attached to the trim or does it matter?

Thanks
Dave

Just pull them off the dash with some pliers and stick them back on the trim.
