What kind of options are you looking for?

Plain and simple?
Middle of the road?
Fully loaded?

New or used truck? What's the budget?

I'd suggest a 10th gen since you think the new ones are crap. 1997 to 2003 or if your looking for a 4 door it would be a 01 to 03. Pretty solid engines and transmissions, still look good and most are great trucks

I had 3 different '97 - '03 F150s. very nice trucks and you can do a lot of things to them to personalize. Being in OK I would look for a short bed 2wd step side bed with a 5.4. if you can't make that raise your pulse a little nothing will.

think a poor man's lightning.

of course with the kiddos you probably need a back seat, than you may as well go 4x4 super cab or crew cab. Only drawback to Supercab for you would be the clam shell doors. put one in a parking lot between two other vehicles, now try to get the kidddoes in the back seat.

it can be done, I did it for many years but my next truck was a full crewcab for that reason.

The 97 to 03 f150s with the 4.6 or 5.4 V8 may be the most reliable trucks ever built. The V6 has an issue in the 97 and 98 models but the newer ones are solid.
