Well, at least it's still a V8!

I suspect one of these days you are going to see the announcement that F-150's will only come with a V-6 as the "big" engine.....

The first generation 5.0 was planned with DI in the future, and the second Gen 5.0 was built with a revised head design to accept DI injectors

Doesn't make sense to dump the 5.0 for a slightly smaller engine, unless they're cranking out crazy MPG out of it? Big CAFE is the only thing that motivates power plant changes.

I'm taking this one with the entire shaker of salt...

There could be a small bump in compression ratio if they switch over to DI but that has been designed into the heads since day 1. The latest designs use a combination of port and direct injection but that shouldn't be an issue with the current design. I don't see a real benefit to dropping a new or even revised engine unless it has something big that isn't mentioned in the link. What they are talking about doing could easily be done to the current engine for less cost.

Looks like it's staying for a few more years. This is a reticle for the 2018s

I wish people would stop whining about lower displacement engines. This is 2017 and not 1997, as long as the performance isn't cut who the hell cares.
They can dump turbos and superchargers for all I care as long as the truck can do the job and tow.

Nope. No replacement for displacement.
