Question of the Week: Have you owned non-Ford trucks?
While most of our members are proud Ford truck fans, many of us have owned other brands in the past and that brings us to our Question of the Week.
Have you owned other brands of truck? Did you own some other brand before getting into Fords or have you gone back and forth over the years?

I've only owned Ford trucks (both Rangers and F-150's) but my old man had two back in the day that I would LOVE to have now to play around with!
The first was a '66 Dodge 1/2 ton with a 318 in it -- my dad swore that was the fastest truck he ever owned! This was the model with the "bug eye" front headlights that Dodge ran with for a few years back in the 1960's. I was pretty young when he owned it, but still have very vivid memories of that truck and what it looked like!
Another that he had that I would really like to have today was a '72 Chevrolet C-20 -- the first new vehicle my family ever owned! It was a leftover '72 purchased at a time when the new '73 body style was already on the dealer lots and it was pretty "tarted-up" for a truck in that era with A/C, tilt wheel, etc. I would have been 8 years old when he bought it, but I can remember the evening he brought it home as clearly as if it was yesterday!
It's hard to beat old pick-up trucks when it comes to making good memories......

Yup. My first was a Mazda regular cab. The second was a Toyota, extended cab - it was like the Tacoma, but it was before the Tacoma came out. The third was a Nissan Frontier Crew Cab 4x4.
They were all good trucks. The only problem I had was the air conditioner compressor in the Toyota decided to freeze up one day. That cost about $1200 to have repaired as I recall.
I really liked the Nissan, it was great for Forest Service road driving in the mountains, but, it didn't have the strength to pull our trailer, so I graduated to a 2-year old F150 SCrew 4x4 King Ranch in 2007.
As long as I can still drive, I'll have a pickup. I do too much hauling and towing to be without one.

Wife and I had a 1999 Suburban if that count's! Nice vehicle for storm evacuations and long trips. I had Chevy company pickups in the late 60's and early 70's that I really liked. 1968 C-20 and a 1970 C-30 Longhorn that had a close to 9' bed. These trucks held up well considering they were hauling oilfield equipment daily while getting 50K miles a year put on them. Back then Chevy had a 307 cubic inch engine that would require major work at around 75K miles. It was a toss up for me in 1984 between Chevy and Ford for the first one I actually bought and it ended up being a 1984 XLT loaded out at the time and I kept it 13 yrs. That was the first of 6 Fords and I never had any thing major go wrong with any of them. Wife had a 2005 Tundra for a few months before Katrina but that one ended up being a work truck for her brother.

Between what I have personally owned and the trucks at work I have had about every model the big three manufactures have put out. Generally they are all about the same, each has good and bad points. I keep coming back to Ford due to the styling, my personal trucks have been pretty consistent with Ford since 1998.

My first truck was an '87 Mazda B2600 4x4. I sold it to buy my first full-size truck - a '94 Chevy K1500. I had to replace the front axle seals every 20K miles on that truck. I kept it for 15 years (~150k miles) until I bought my current '08 F150 4x4 Crewcab. Over the years I have purchased a couple other Ford trucks for my son... an '01 Ranger 4x4 and a '90 F150 Lariat.

Bought a used 72 1/2 ton Chevy 350V8 with only 25k miles on it back in 74. Liked it, powerful. I thought I wanted a small truck, a Toyota, but they were costing more than Chevys. But, I had to drive 35 miles one way to work and it burned too much gas. Couldn't talk the wife into driving it so I sold it and got my money back about 3 months after buying it.
I bought a new chevy LUV (Isuzu) back in 81, 80hp 1.9L engine, 4 speed manual. I liked it ok, but the rear brakes locked up prematurely, the red paint faded terribly in the 18 months I owned it. The Yuasa battery lasted only one year. I checked the voltage and it was only charging at 13 volts so I adjusted the manual regulator. The vacuum advance diaghragm ruptured. Everywhere people were raving about how great Japanese vehicles were back then. that was not my experience with it or the 75 Civic I bought new.
More recently, a used 94 F150swb 4x4 XLT, 35k to 92K with only a universal joint replacement required. Bought a new 2000F150 5.4 XLT scab4x4 and put 105k miles on it. Rear brake rotors warped and the right rear axle seal was replaced. VERY reliable truck. Bought my current 2002 with 69k miles on it. Very reliable until recently and I have had to replace both front bearing hubs, rr axle and bearing, tie rod ends, idler arm, lca ball joints on both sides. 134k miles on it.
