Texas highway information requested

I'm leaving tomorrow for San Diego, and the weather forecast is not good for I-40 later this week. I want to take the southern route, but I want to avoid the DFW area. Can any of you kind Texans tell me what US-277 is like between Wichita Falls and Abilene? Thanks!

just a two lane highway, but not bad. Well, half of it is two lane, as you get closer to Abilene, four lane.

150 miles - so how long should it take driving at the speed limit accounting for traffic?

If my experience from 40 years ago is still good (and I think it is), you'll be able to hold the speed limit the entire route. I think you'll be able to pass slower traffic fairly easily.

Staying off I-40 is a good idea if they have a snowfall. It can get pretty icy and you don't want to slip off the road in the mountains in New Mexico.

Thanks, Jack - been there, done that - drove back last year in the snow from just east of Kingman all the way to just west of ABQ, spent the night in Moriarty, and couldn't get back on I-40 till almost noon the next day because they closed it overnight.

What *IS* the speed limit out there on 277 these days? 70 except through towns?

If anyone cares (and by the lack of responses from anyone except 2 moderators I doubt anyone does care) it took me 2 hours and 15 minutes. All but 1 town has now been bypassed, most of the road is 4 lane with a few 2 and 3 lane stretches, and the speed limit is 70 or 75 most of the way.

Thanks for nothing, folks.

It DOES seem like you might have gotten a bit more interest.

But, I'm glad you took the alternate route and the trip was uneventful. Sounds like (from the time it took), you held the speed limit most of the way.

Maybe no one is familiar with that route.

Did that a few years back. My daughter lived in Whichita Falls, my Dad lived in Parks, and family in Kingman. Had to miss them all and go the I-10. Took a full tank of gas to get out of Texas, blink and you would miss New Mexcio, then on to AZ & CA. It seemed like that drive took F O R E V E R, I drove it straight through. 22 hrs Whichita Falls to Corona.........boy was my wife pizzed!!!!

I'm in the Super 8 in Van Horn right now. No precip yet, but the wind today on I-20/I-10 was TERRIBLE. I filled the tank in Pecos and I'm already under 3/4 tank - I got maybe 12 mpg on this stretch, cruise locked at 80. The dust and tumbleweeds were everywhere.

Casa Grande tomorrow, San Diego Sunday.
