79 k5 blazer mud truck build

heres my build thread.

got the truck off craigslist for $1600 and drove two hours to forest park, GA to pick it up.

the bad: bad paint, wooden floor, no interior, some rust

the good: new built 350, headers to dual glasspacks, rebuilt tranny, all lights work, 3/4 ton axles, all glass, powered rear glass, 3in. body lift, 12in. superlift springs in front, 15in. custom springs in rear, dropped transfer case, crossover steering.

my goal: well at first the goal was to regear the 3/4 ton axles and run around a 44in. tire but as i played that out in my head i kept wanting to go bigger so now im going to put it on rockwells and run a 44-49in. tire.

here are some pics

pulling it home, ha we acutally got very lucky with the trailer. we had to pump up the tires on the blazer some to get it on the trailer and still the side walls on both sides were scrubbing the trailer rails.

then we got some 3/16th steel and made a floor for it. i already have the herculiner too so the whole interior will be herculined.

here it is as of today, i welded a bull bar on the front bumper that came with it, put some cables on the tailgate, gave it some fresh black paint, and changed all the fluids. also in the picture the grille is out along with all the side markers.

and today i primed and painted the top, only have a picture of it primed but it's painted lime green, as will be the headlight surrounds and the bowtie.

oh and heres a pic of some gator seats i got of craigslist for it for $100, never been sat in.

well thats all so far i'll be updating this thread as i go on.

I like this project. I have a '77 on 3" lift, 33s, 10k winch, dual lockers, rebuilt 350, glasspacks. Super fun beater firewood rig, would love to lift it higher and get bigger tires. Hows the rust on the frame? The c-channel on these late 70s chevies are extremely weak and prone to flexxing and cracking, so keep an eye on it.

sweet truck, yeah i have a few buddies with k5's and they give them hell and they hardly ever break. the frame actually looks pretty good but support has been welded in up front where they tend to bend.

Was it that year Chevy that had a problem with the frame cracking at the steering box?

yep it was this year, that's where a previous owner has welded some supports on mine. also these are bad about the hoods bending.
