Got in a fender bender that pushed the chrome piece of my front bumper dangerously close to my tire. I don't want to get a puncture while driving so I removed the front bumper, valence, ect. It was 4 bolts and the whole thing came off which was nice.

Anyways, is that illegal?

I'm gonna guess that it is because of safety (I only had to drive so far about 4 blocks so I risked possibly getting a ticket), so anybody know how I can get by? I wont be able to fix it until the weekend because of were I am located right now, so is there something I can jimmy on the front that will make it a "bumper"? Gutters, Ex-wives, In-laws, ect. Anything will help.

A 2x8 will do.

 

When I had my little fender bender a year ago, I used a a 4x4x6 in place of the rear bumper... worked like a charm...

I bolted it in with long bolts, and use some deck screws to hold my license plate.

I had a "wooden" F150....

 

Back in the day, a rear bumper was optional equipment.
Low end trucks were regularly sold without a rear bumper.

I couldn't find a front bumper requirement in Virginia.
Va has a front plate and if you can display, you're ok.

 

I believe that bumper requirements are for new vehicle construction only. If your jurisdiction requires an annual/biannual safety inspection, then you might have to have a front bumper. However, there are many classic trucks that remove both bumpers and fill in the areas with roll pans. Not sure if this would only work with vehicles 25+ or not. But I couldn't see a problem with you tooling around without a front bumper for a week. As was mentioned above, if you have a front plate be sure to have it in your windshield or zip-tied somewhere.

 

While I don't think you'd get pulled over for it, if you do, just explain to the officer that you were in an accident not too long ago and removed it so you could drive the truck to work and back and plan on repairing it ASAP.

as long as you have the front plate attatched on the front of the vehicle (if you have to have a license plate on the front)

 

I never had a problem cruzin around when I do bumper swaps or body work.

Agreed ive done it two separate times for a week or so. just put a front plate up if you have to. hell im driving more illegal by not having mine

 

I rode around for a year without a front bumper on my ranger, trying to save up enough for it. I didn't have any legal problems with it.

 

I see cars around here all the time without bumpers. Some don't even have quarter panels with the doors and trunk/hood taped shut. Just yesterday I saw a Jeep with no rear bumper and both of the taillights and most of the rear hatch made of red tape to match the red paint on it.

 

I know in Texas the front plate has to be at the furthest front part of the vehical....windshield does not cut it. Got a ticket for that. I'd try to have it displayed some how, zip tie to the grill or on the front somewhere. Glad no one was hurt in the accident.
